Concerns raised by Governor Sani over the presence of 200 million illicit firearms

In an effort to address the ongoing security situation in Nigeria, Senator Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, has called for a review of the country’s guns laws.

About 200 million firearms are currently in circulation in the country, according to the governor, who revealed this in a talk on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

The increased insecurity afflicting the nation at the present time is, according to the governor, caused by the proliferation of firearms in Nigeria.\

The ex-lawmaker claimed that he sought to update the Firearms Act “because it is obsolete” during his time in the Senate. Over 30 years have passed since Nigeria’s Firearms Act was last revised.

The Nigerian guns laws, according to Governor Sani, is out of step with international norms.

His claim is that no government allows the seizure of illicit firearms, prosecution, and eventual release on the basis of charges rather than incarceration, with the sole exception of Nigeria. If you want to go home, you can pay a fee of around 50,000 naira.

“That is why I started stressing, firearms control,” Sani said. “UNREC” (the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa) had previously presented a report to the senate stating that, out of 250 million firearms in circulation in West Africa, approximately 200 million were in circulation in Nigeria.
