Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, provides extraordinary scholarships to overseas students who want to study in the United States. After being accepted to the university, international students are eligible to be considered for these scholarships.

The Sweetwater Baptist Association and a group of cattlemen and pastors who wanted to introduce Christian higher education to the Southwest founded Hardin-Simmons University in 1891 as Abilene Baptist College. The school’s mission would be to “bring kids to Christ, teach them about Christ, and train them for Christ.” C.W. Merchant, a rancher, donated the original acreage to the institution. It was the first higher education institution established in Texas west of Fort Worth. In 1892, the school was renamed Simmons College after an early benefactor, James B. Simmons. By 1907, it had 524 students enrolled and 49 employees.

It was renamed Simmons University in 1925. In 1934, it was renamed Hardin-Simmons University in honor of Mary and John G. Hardin, who were also significant donors. Since 1941, the university has been affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

HSU considers academic records, college admission exam scores, co-curricular involvement, enrollment status, and expected major when awarding scholarships to overseas students.
