7 Years After a Manhunt, How a Suspected Kidnap Kingpin Was Caught – Police

Mathew Edozieuno Nwankwo, a member of an infamous kidnapping gang, was apprehended in Anambra State's Nteje, Oyi local government area.

The state was terrorized by the kidnapping kingpin, who has been on the run since 2015, under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano.

The suspect apparently returned to the state after fleeing after his gang comrades were detained, believing that now that the previous regime had fallen, he could enjoy a secure heaven.

While he was hiding, his home and the homes of his gang mates in Nteje and Umueri were both destroyed.

Asst. Commissioner Joseph Agugoesi, the team leader, mentioned other gang members Mr. Solomon Morah, aka Mmili, and Hyacinth Chibudu, saying that their homes were also demolished.

Before they were apprehended, the gang members had been demanding roughly #70 million in ransom from their victims, he claimed.

According to information obtained by The Nation, State Police Command officers apprehended the suspect at his rural house in the early hours of Tuesday after receiving a tip.

Police spokeswoman Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest on Wednesday and stated that the suspect was being held by police while inquiries were being conducted.

To avoid jeopardizing investigations, he said that it would be premature to make the early findings public.

“Further development shall be finished,” he said, adding that the suspect, Matthew Cyril Nwankwo, was in prison.
