An irate mob beat a middle-aged man named Usman Buda to death on Sunday, June 25 after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad.
According to ASP Ahmad Rufai, the command’s spokesperson, who confirmed the incident to the media, at around 9.20am today, police received a distress call claiming that the dead, a butcher, had been beaten and swarmed by some Muslim devotees who had caused him significant injuries.
“The Commissioner of Police, Area Commander Metro, and DPO Kwani led a team of police officers and all other operational commanders to the scene upon getting the information.
“Upon arrival, the mob fled the scene and left the victim unconscious where he was rescued and taken to Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto (UDUTH) for treatment and later confirmed dead at the said Hospital,” the report reads.
Rufai reported that the area is now calm. He said that CP Ali Hayatu Kaigama, the state’s chief of police, had urged the public to go about their legitimate business and not to panic because things were under control.
Meanwhile, he stated, “Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the offenders and hold them accountable.”
