Aisha Buhari, the first lady, withdrew the lawsuit she had filed against Aminu Mohammed, a final-year student at the Federal University of Dutse.
On Friday, the prosecution's attorney, Fidelis Ogbobe, withdrew the case against the defendant after well-meaning Nigerians intervened. He claimed that the First Lady, who serves as the nation's mother, made the decision to do so.
To forward the application for the withdrawal of the case, the attorney used Section 108 subsection 2(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
After being detained for harassing First Lady Aisha Buhari on Twitter, the 23-year-old environmental management student was secretly arraigned in court and confined in the Suleja correctional facility in Niger State.
Nigerians have reacted to the development on social media.
Shehu Sani, the senator:
Aminu Adamu Mohammed was defended by those speaking out for free speech, as well as by those speaking out for Aminu Adamu Mohammed.
After filling herself with our money and torturing an innocent man, Aisha Buhari withdraws the lawsuit against university student Aminu Adamu.
Nigerians, your voice is very important. Let's quit tolerating tyranny in any shape or form.
I urge Aminu's legal team to file a lawsuit against Aisha Buhari and demand N300 million in damages for their client's kidnapping and torture. This serious wrong shouldn't be permitted to go unpunished.
