Ukraine War: Before discussions, Putin seeks acknowledgement of annexations

According to Russia, any peace negotiations must be supported by Western recognition of “new areas” acquired from Ukraine.

This comes after US President Joe Biden said he would be willing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the BBC.

President Biden told reporters, “If in fact there is an interest in him deciding that he’s looking for a way to end the war.”

Moscow declared that it was willing to negotiate, but not over the demand of the West to leave Ukraine.

Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, reportedly spoke with President Vladimir Putin for the first time since September on Friday. During the hour-long conversation, according to Berlin, Scholz reportedly urged Putin to find a diplomatic solution that involved withdrawing Russian troops from Ukraine “as soon as possible.”

Putin had also urged Berlin to “reconsider its approaches in the context of the Ukrainian events,” the Kremlin responded.

Recall that the West accuses Russia of annexing four areas of Ukraine unlawfully and of waging war on that country.
